Social Studies Reflection
Name Carson DeAngelis

Which chapter in World History did you enjoy most this year and why? My favorite chapter in World History was chapter 14. Chapter 14 was about medieval Europe. I liked this chapter because I got to learn about knights and chivalry. Also, I got to learn about the black plague and different ways of living in medieval Europe.

Describe some of the things that you learned in that chapter. Is there a project that you completed that you enjoyed working on? During this project we worked on a web quest and I liked working on that because I learned more about medieval Europe and it was about things I didn’t know like forms of entertainment.

What new skills have you learned throughout the year? Throughout the year I have learned to study as soon as you hear about them. Also I have learned to always pay attention to everything.
How can you apply this knowledge to the real world? I can apply what I learned to the real world when I get a job and I have to prepare for a meeting. Also, if I am at a meeting, I will have to pay full attention.

Here is an example for my work:
A- What were the 4 parts of a manor? The 4 parts of the manor are the church, farmland, village, and castle.
B- Why did the king offer nobles land? The king offered nobles land because they would give him soldiers in return.
C- What was the lowest class of people on a manor? The lowest class of a manor was the serfs, or peasants.
D- What was the main religion of the Middle Ages? Catholic was the main religion of the middle ages.
E- How did the Church get involved with government? The church got involved with the government because high ranking priests would be part of the king’s council.
F-This page lists some of the defenses built into a castle. Scroll through the bold words- these are the different defenses. Choose 3 to write and describe how they were used to defend the castle against attack. (Don’t just pick the first 3- get a variety!) Arrow loops were used to fire bows from cover. Battlements were walkways on top of the walls so that guards could fire arrows from higher grounds or fight the enemy on the wall. A drawbridge was a bridge that crossed the gap. It could be drawn or raised to stop easy entrance.
G- Describe 4 forms of entertainment in or around the castle. The castle’s entertainment included musicians playing, acrobats balancing on blunt sword tips, jugglers juggling daggers, and tumblers rolling and jumping.
H- What events occurred at tournaments? The tournaments included mock battles, and jousting. Also feast and music were in the order.

I- What was chivalry? Chivalry was a knight’s code of honor.
J- What did 13th Century rules of chivalry say about how men should treat women? Knights had to serve, honor, and never displease women.
K- Describe the food diet of the nobles (lords)? A lord’s diet included geese, chicken, and larks.
L- Describe the diet of the peasant (serf) class? Peasants ate bread made of barley and rye, ale made from barley, well water, peas and beans would be baked into bread.
M- Compare these two diets. Why do you think the serfs would have loved to visit the manor house or castle? I think serfs would want to visit the castle because there is other food such as meat like birds, also the serfs usually don’t get a lot of protein.
N- On the left are 9 topics of everyday
Life. Choose one you are interested in learning about, and then click on it. From that new webpage, detail 5 facts or descriptions for that topic. *Don’t be skimpy with your descriptions- * A lot of today’s cities in Europe have medieval roots. Vikings had a lot to do with cities. They would plunder more than they could carry, and trade with surrounding villages, and turn the city into a trading camp.
